Celebrating Cultural Diversity in the Baby Room
Introducing cultural celebrations in the baby room provides many benefits. It helps foster early cultural awareness, spiritual connection, and sensory development through gentle, age-appropriate experiences. These activities introduce values of kindness, sharing, and gratitude, while creating a joyful and inclusive environment for our little learners. To celebrate the beginning of Ramadan, we planned a special creative activity for our babies. We prepared disposable plates with paper cut-outs of a moon and star. The children were provided with blue and yellow paint, brushes, and rollers to explore and create their own artwork. The babies enjoyed painting their plates blue and decorating the moon and stars with yellow paint. Everyone was excited and engaged as they explored colours, textures, and creativity through this sensory experience. These beautiful moments help build a sense of belonging, cultural respect, and connection with the community from an early age.
Exploring Our New Climbing Equipment – 4 Year Kinder Fun!
Our 4-year-old Kinder children have been absolutely loving our new climbing equipment! Initially, they walked together along the structure, sharing ideas and carefully coordinating their movements As their confidence grew, they began climbing up and down different levels of the hurdles, taking turns and supporting each other along the way. One child confidently hung upside down from one of the higher sections of the equipment, demonstrating strength and control Inspired by this, another friend decided to give it a try. After a few determined attempts, she proudly managed to hang upside down too — showing courage, persistence, and resilience It was beautiful to see their teamwork, risk-taking, and growing independence in action. Toddlers Learning About Clean Up Australia Day
Our toddlers participated in Clean Up Australia Day and learned about the importance of caring for our environment . Educators discussed what happens when rubbish is thrown on the ground. The children learned that garbage can end up in our oceans and make sea animals sick To extend their understanding, we created a hands-on experience called “Cleaning Up the Ocean” One tub was filled with water, sea animals, and pieces of “rubbish” like wrappers and plastic bottles Next to it was a clean tub.Using tongs, the children carefully removed the rubbish from the “ocean.”“Look, I am cleaning! This is yucky!” said one child.“Where do we put the garbage?” asked the educator.“In the bin!” the children proudly responded Through this activity, our toddlers: -Developed environmental awareness -Practised fine motor skills using tongs -Built language and communication skills -Learned responsibility and care for living things We are so proud of our little eco-warriors making a big difference!
Outdoor Ice Painting
This is such a beautiful sensory + science + art combo And perfect for your funded 3-year-old funded kinder Outdoor Ice Painting – Funded 3-Year-Old Kinder Our educators created a wonderful outdoor painting experience using large sheets of paper and colourful ice cubes. The children were instantly curious and excited to explore! Before beginning, the educator explained how to use the ice cubes for painting and gently reminded everyone about taking turns while sharing resources — building social skills alongside creativity. Each child had the opportunity to hold, slide, and move the ice cubes across the paper. As the ice slowly melted, it created beautiful watery lines and colourful patterns. The children carefully observed the changes happening right before their eyes. Ali shared, “It’s cold!” as he moved his ice cube like a car across the paper. Lana excitedly said, “It’s changing colour,” watching the colours blend as the ice melted. This engaging sensory experience supported: -Fine motor development-Scientific thinking (cause and effect)-Sensory exploration-Colour recognition-Social skills through turn-taking The children remained fully engaged, enjoying the cool sensation of the ice and the creative freedom of painting outdoors. Learning is even more magical when it’s hands-on and full of discovery!
Building Scissor Skills in Our Funded 3-Year-Old Kinder Program
Over the past few weeks, we observed our Junior Kinders showing a strong interest in using scissors to cut paper. To support their curiosity, we gathered for group time to learn about scissor safety and the correct way to hold and use them. Miss Heena carefully demonstrated step-by-step how to hold the scissors properly. The children were encouraged to follow along, remembering our special reminder — “Thumb on top!” For this experience, we used child-safe scissors suitable for 3-year-olds, and each child was supported one-on-one throughout the activity to ensure safety and confidence. The children sat around the table with their own strip of paper and practiced cutting carefully, always pointing the scissors away from their faces. Educators provided gentle guidance and later worked individually with children who needed extra support. This experience supported: -Fine motor development-Hand-eye coordination-Concentration and focus-Following instructions-Safety awareness We are so proud of our Junior Kinders for listening carefully and trying something new with such enthusiasm. Sensory Play & Little Scientists at Work!
Today our children were delighted to participate in a hands-on sensory experience as we made our very own play dough! The children took turns pouring the flour into the tray. Mia said, “I want to do it first.”Our educator gently reminded, “Children, we need to wait for our turn.” A beautiful moment of learning patience and turn-taking. The educator then introduced the ingredients — flour, salt, water, oil and cream of tartar — and explained how we would mix them together. The excitement grew as we added colour and oil and watched the bubbles form! Lana exclaimed, “It looks like a volcano!” The teacher responded, “Children, be careful, it’s hot like lava.”After carefully mixing everything together, we created bright yellow play dough! When asked, “What colour is the play dough?”Ali proudly replied, “It’s yellow!” The children remained engaged throughout the activity, exploring their imagination with different tools while developing fine motor skills, vocabulary, turn-taking, and sensory awareness. Learning through play is always the best way!
Our First Sports Incursion of the Year!
Today was an exciting day in our Kinder room as we welcomed Don for our very first sports incursion of the year! The children were absolutely thrilled to see all the colourful sports equipment he brought along – curiosity and excitement filled the room from the very start. The session began with light stretching to warm up our growing bodies. The children reached up high, stretched their arms and legs, and twisted from side to side, preparing themselves for all the fun ahead. Next, Don introduced colourful rings, and the creativity truly came alive! Some children used them as steering wheels, pretending to drive around, while others explored different movements and invented their own imaginative games. It was wonderful to see their confidence, coordination, and creativity shine through. Sports incursions like these help develop gross motor skills, balance, teamwork, listening skills, and self-confidence — all while having so much fun! We can’t wait for our next session!
Valentine Day Celebration
At Small Friends Childcare & Education Pearl Street, we’ve transformed our foyer with beautiful red hearts and a message of love, support, and care. We’re teaching our little ones the power of kindness! This week, the children are busy creating heartfelt cards and art, expressing “I love you” to mommy, daddy, siblings, and friends. In a world of chaos and busy schedules, we believe it’s vital to teach children to pause, spread love, and create calm around them. Celebrating Valentine’s Day helps children foster empathy, express appreciation, and build meaningful connections.
Creativity in full swing
The children enjoyed drawing expressive faces on cardboard shapes and then using colourful threads to design unique hairstyles. From curly hair to spiky styles, their imaginations truly came to life! We also provided scissors so the children could carefully cut the threads themselves. This hands-on experience helped strengthen their fine motor skills, improve hand-eye coordination, and build confidence as they practised safe cutting techniques. Activities like these not only spark creativity but also support independence, concentration, and problem-solving skills. We love watching our kinder children take pride in their beautiful creations!
